3D Racer 2 - Game preview / gameplay
It's in 3D, it's a racer, and it's the second installment in a series of games. Here we've got 3D Racer II, a sleek looking racer that combines shooting and driving together in one explosive package.
At first glance, the game is certainly visually appealing. The graphics are done well, the sound is great, and it presents itself rather well. Let's have a closer look.
As mentioned previously, the graphics are presented well, and as can be expected of the title, the graphics are all 3D. One downside though is with the animations for the cars. Rather than looking as if they're actually driving along, they instead look like static objects which slide down the screen to meet your also seemingly static car. This takes away from the "racer" aspect of 3D Racer II, but it can be overlooked.
The audio here is a whole lot better than the animations. You've got a catchy beat and well-rendered sound effects that blend together nicely to add to the overall atmosphere of the game. Shooting your main gun has a nicely satisfying feel to it, but even better is the feel you get from hearing said shots slamming into your opponents.
While the game may be called a "racer", it in fact plays a bit more like a rhythm game. You don't have any control over your acceleration, and the track doesn't make any twists or turns anywhere. It's a straight line populated by different cars moving at different speeds. You press left and right to (of course) move left and right. Rather than actually steering though, you're instead choosing between two lanes. If a lane gets too populated or if a car comes hurtling towards you, you can hit X to shoot. You also gets nukes which you can use by hitting N. The game also has a "rage mode" that is activated with the space bar.
As stated before, it's not so much a racing game as it is a rhythm one. That's not to say it's bad though. A bit misleading, yes, but not bad. The goal is simply to get from one point to the other, avoiding the obstacles that you can and blowing up those that you can't. Solid, and simple fun.
In closing, while 3D Racer II might not be much of a racer, it's still a solid game that provides decent gameplay that you can have great fun with. Enjoy!
