40 Winks (PC) - MortaPlay [Part 1: Introduction and Tick Tock Manor]
Difficulty: Medium.
Hey there, sleepyheads! I’m finally back with some recordings! This time, we’re diving into an obscure platformer from my childhood: 40 Winks, or ‘Ruff & Tumble’ for the UK!
This game, originally released in 1999 on PlayStation 1, was also planned for Game Boy Color and Nintendo 64.
The latter offered an exclusive co-op mode and was eventually published by Piko Interactive, a company hated for many reasons, including this ‘wonderful’ PC port of theirs…
We play as either Ruff or Tumble, two children who must save the Winks and the dream world from the grumpy Nitekap and his lackey Threadbear!
Your selection won’t change much. Some secret locations are only accessible to boys or girls, and you’ll experience a few superficial differences, such as blue or pink buttons, or Ruff transforming into a jester or Tumble into a fairy.
For this first part, we’ll cover the introduction, the tutorial, and the Tick Tock Manor (a mansion which got a lot more frightening now because of its name… 🙃 ) in the nightmare world!
Wakey Wakey can teach you the basics in the house, as well as give you advice later by collecting his icons. Your home provides access to each of the dream realms, all unlocked one by one.
Every area offers you three levels, a bonus race, and a boss (which is always a variation of Threadbear). In the first, you’ll have to find four dream keys and several Winks, which are required to reach Threadbear’s challenges (the forty Winks will open the door to the final battle).
You’ll also need to collect cogs during your adventures to unlock certain obstacles, as well as transform using boxes that grant you special powers.
The mansion is a good introduction to the whole experience, offering you standard enemies like the Hoodwinks, as well as mechanics such as buttons and teleporters.
One of my creations in Rayman ReDesigner is actually a partial adaptation of Tick Tock Manor! • Rayman ReDesigner - More prototypes (...
I’m not going to lie, while I love it and have a lot of nostalgia for it, this game isn’t that incredible, even for its time…
‘Move over Mario’ was certainly a bold phrase, as it had no chance of overshadowing the famous plumber or other previously released classics like Sonic Adventure or Banjo-Kazooie…
Despite everything, 40 Winks is full of charm, whether through its beautiful and endearing cutscenes, the atmosphere of its worlds that perfectly capture childhood dreams, its colourful and distinct environments, or its memorable and immersive music!
In short, a pleasant experience to put in the hands of youngest players, or for retro enthusiasts in search of forgotten gems!
This is, however, the worst version, because it’s nothing more than a poor emulation of the original on PS1… So I apologise if it’s not very good visually; I’m the first to complain about it anyway…
Otherwise, since the image is in the files, you can run it on a superior emulator! That’s what I plan to do if I play the GOG release on my second channel, which will also be an opportunity to give Tumble a try.
I had to show this specific release of this classic at least once… You’ll have a much better experience with the original disc on a real machine, or with the PlayStation 3, Portable, and Vita ports still available on the PlayStation Store (exclusively in NTSC format, however)…
See you in the Witch Way Woods! Have a great night…
