REVIEW:
-While fascinated with origin stories of these old games, I've never been one for picking up Japanese versions over Western releases. Granted the gameplay runs at the native 60hz speed but since my Snes is modded to run all unoptomised titles at the correct speed, I've always preferred to stick with where the nostalgia lays in PAL carts. That said, exclusives are a different matter. Across my many systems I've amassed a modest collection of Jap exclusive imports, with the Saturn taking podium (predominately shooters), & while I appreciate my knowledge of Japanese exclusives is relatively poor, I pride myself on always striving to locate anything that's tickles my fancy when eventually enlightened toward it.
UFO currently remains my only Jap-SNES exclusive & almost instantly its apparent why it never saw a transition to the West. I could google the game to decipher the storyline in a more coherent manner, but it's far more enjoyable to simply roll with my unfiltered assumptions.
Before the action even begins, the initial cutscenes depict your arch enemy as a man with a boiling kettle strapped to his head! If that wasnt enough, our hero rides into the level on what appears to be a pimped out Tatooine landcrusier, dressed in a tight fitted leotard not dissimilar too Duffman from The Simpsons, complete with a UFO stenciled bottle cap as a hat! Is UFO a beer in Japan? Dont answer back, my imagination surrounding the bizzarities of this game is far more entertaining!
In all respects this is a beat em up, & an average one at that. Despite a novelty special move where you throw (UFO) beer? Over an enemy whilst appearing to scream "Coffeeeeeee", attack is limited to a punch kick combo threw button bashing X & a basic jump and roll attack. A throw move would really have helped to flesh out the action.
With only 5 stages it's a short & very easy game with enemies rarely causing much concern once you adopt the right offense. Even tho at one point down to my final HP & last life, I was able to carefully build my lives back to 4 before the final boss fight. Beaten on my 1st playthrough; easy it maybe, but charming it is also!
