Here is the full playthrough of Adventures of Batman & Robin done live on IGTV
Follow me on instagram @CabinSNES_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no Save States.
-Everytime I see this title I just think of that wonderful Blackadder episode and it makes me laugh, which is good because I wasn't laughing much during this playthrough!
BOB had all the ingredients to have been a stand up classic hidden gem. Unfortunately all the good work in gameplay, aesthetic and level design is shat all over thanks to some God awful control decisions!
Let's start with the positives though. The game is broken into 3 worlds each boasting about 15 stages. It makes for a pretty long game, however since you're awarded a password every 3 stages (occasionally every 4), it seems to balance the difficulty/reward factor nicely. Stages can be considerably maze like, demanding lots of trial and error to overcome the many beginner traps and unfair obstacles. The later stages especially demand a ridiculous requirement for memorising just about everything to survive. Thankfully exploring is rewarded with many powerups that increase survival rate significantly. What's encouraging is how quickly a hard stage becomes quite easy after you've beaten it once before and memorized a satisfactory route.
Credit also has to be given to your arsenal, which consists of 6 very different & equally useful weapon upgrades & 6 robot gadgets such as shields, springs, helicopters etc all switchable on the fly, all of which really boast gameplay mechanics.
So wheres the issue? It's simple; like numerous other guilty parties, BOB falls foul of choosing animation over control! All those pretty multi-frame turn & duck animations may look pleasing at first but sacrificing both jump & shoot while they animate is unacceptable! Since the majority of the gameplay involves reacting to constant surprise attacks, having both shoot and jump handicapped for a second everytime you turn or duck results in an inevitable ocean of cheap hits & accidental death. It never grows tiresome & successfully continues to have me throwing every expletive I know at it game right up till the final stage!
The occasional tricky boss encounter can be demoralising tho stockpiling weapons helps no end!
A decent game that deserves more than the crappy control handicap renders it receiving.
