REVIEW:
-Another recent acquisition that until only weeks ago I knew nothing about which given its fast paced horizontal shooter setting, I'm surprised this is our first acquaintance!
The snes isnt blessed with the rich library of shooters the Megadrive or PC-engine boasts but it has its surprises. A couple of standout titles top any serious SNESshump list, & a handful of others makeup honorary mentions. However I cant recall ever seeing EDF on any & I think that's a mistake!
EDF is far from groundbreaking, but the fun factor is there which is the most important element. It safely treads on ground previously trailblazed by similar shooters of its ilk in design & gameplay but what it does do well, it does very well and some of its original flare is refreshingly commendable.
Tho level design & action are hardly inspiring, the boss fights are visually quite impressive, if on the easier side, especially when you've levelled up to improve weapon capabilities significantly. The diversity in weapon selection really is the games selling point. As well as 2 supporting satellites offering different formations that upgrade with levelling, there's also 8 very different gun options to play with, each unlocking new firepower upgrades apon reaching any of the ships 5 level ups. The variety really is impressive however you are limited to one selection per level, requiring considerable trial & error to discover your most effective offense. Its nice that you dont need to level weapons independently meaning the slower but more powerful weapons become far more crucial late on.
Divided into 6 relatively short stages, with difficulty hovering somewhere around the middle for novice players, those with more understanding of the weapon selection & powerup mechanics, will likely find the experience on the easier side of shooters. That said there's still enough challenge given your life count, to render beating the game quite a rewarding experience, especially the final boss (at least on Normal, as you can hear from my reaction), Pro tip; you dont need to avoid the upper & lower walls!🤦♂️ only took 3 failed attempts to work that out!
