Here is the playthrough of Top Gear on Professional Mode done live on IGTV. Due to space I was only able to record the final
Follow me on instagram @CabinSNES_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.
REVIEW
-Racing isnt usually my go to genre, aside from the standard lineup you expect to see in any self respecting snes collection, I've made no attempt to educate myself in any leftfield selections. I'd love to claim that Top Gear was the exception to this, however that would be a lie given the cartridge was freebie included with my SNES.
Given the timeframe of release and that developer Gremlin Graphics were a UK outfit, it doesnt seem beyond realms of possibilty the title may have had more than a subtle nod to the popular TV show of the same name. Assuming that was the case, the realms of reality the show (at the time), prided itself on promoting, appear somewhat overstretched here!
The action is spread across 8 countries with 4 races a piece.
Tho pitted against 20 other cars, you'll need to finish a minimum of 5th in each race to qualify for the next, rendering the point rewards offered for finishing 6th-10th completely redundant! Should you finish below 5th at anytime its game over! A password is given upon reaching a new country, but each time you fail it's back to the start of those 4 races. This turbo injection of bullshit means that you'll have to continually grind out the early races just to register another failed attempt at a later harder one! It gets old quick, tho practice is often the only way master certain races. Some courses have incredibly obnoxious corners, often including surprise controller throwing obstructions such as trees, signposts & vineyards ON THE TARMAC!
Perhaps the strangest mechanic is the forced splitscreen. Even in single player the AI will control a car in the lower screen. Unlike the other cars, who mostly act as obstructions, this car is an absolute bastard, complete with rubber banding, turbo boosts and a strict ramming mentality.
Refusing to commit to the easy mode, I opted for 'professional'. That said, I also chose the White car which offers the lowest fuel consumption and best grip at a cost of top speed. It certainly makes for the easiest playthrough since if driven well, you'll rarely need the pits!
Planning when to use your 3 turbo boosts & on which laps really is the key to success!
