REVIEW:
-Another children's TV tie-in that slipped me by completely, both the show and the game, although I'm certainly familiar with the occasional Snickers bar! Come again? Yes Snickers actually sponsor the game! It's not subtle either, advertisement is all over the design, including powerups. Even confusingly replacing Armour upgrades with Snickers? I'm Surprised the Mice arent just simply riding giant motorised Snickers bars round the track!
So yes, it is yet another shameless gaming advertisement, however, as with so many before it; McDonald's, Chubba Chub, 7UP, Penguin Bar, the final result is simply a delicious blend of chocolate, peanut and caramel... Sorry I'm hungry.... No, it's a once again a very decent game that despite the sycophantic connection to a Chocolate bar company, actually proves to be a far more enjoyable game than the collaboration would intially suggest. Then again we are dealing with Konami here!
The gameplay involves racing competitors in 25 isometric track environments across 5 worlds. A password & progression to the next world is awarded for a podium finish after every 5 races. Essentially its Mario Kart with passwords.
The similarities to Mario Kart continue in the assortment of interesting powerups. Unlike MK, powerups are awarded to all riders every lap. Each rider has their own unique attacks that can temporarily disable others, as well as being awarded a special attack each time that (also like MK) appears heavily weighted towards offering the best powerups (earthquake, time stop) to riders bringing up the rear. This advantage can easily turn any race position into a potential match winner if utilised right.
Once you're accustomed to the mechanics, winning is relatively easy. Memorising the odd challenging track maybe required but most players should have little issue beating this.
The diversity in characters abilities & attack is commendable and does a lot to breath life into the multiplayer. Track design is equally creative, offering plenty of controller throwing hazards. Similarities with Mario Kart aside, this is unquestionably a very good & highly enjoyable racing game.
