REVIEW
-That cute inflatable blob returns for another round of joyous sucking and blowing.
Kirby's 4 outings on the SNES was a mixed affair including a Puyo-Puyo clone & a Golf game. Fans of the franchise waiting patiently for the 3rd installment of the famous Dreamland series only to be surprised by the arrival of Fun Pak; a collection of mini-games predating Dreamland 3's arrival.
There's no denying much of the games charm comes from the easy gameplay, which allows players of all skill ranges to confidently power through large sections of game without ever feeling hard done by. It's really a testament to great game design that control feels so instantly intuitive despite there being an incredible depth to the seemingly infinite number of powers Kirby can mimic.
Despite the wave of positivity Fun Pak always receives, my first impressions were muted. Like those keenly awaiting another slice of Dreamland pie, my initial impression for a game who's first mini-game; a sloppy 'race' enviroment where Kirby must collect cakes to stay ahead of King Dedede across 3 short uninspiring stages, was enough to make me question the logic of the many 5 star ratings I'd been reading.
Thankfully after 'Gournmet Race'; a series of more traditional Kirby adventures follow, you know; suck, swallow, blow, the good stuff! Just when you begin to find the gameplay a little too easy to enjoy, new gameplay is introduced via the collectathon aspects of Great Cave Adventure & Milky Way Wishes. Aiming for 100% I'd persevered with the sometimes more frustrating aspects of the game to recover all hidden items and powerups.
The final area 'Arena' really sets the wheat from the chaff pitching you into a boss rush of 18 back to back battles. Health refill is offered 5 times but the endurance is high regardless, demanding good understanding of all boss patterns to succeed.
Unfortunately my dogged determination to stick to original hardware only, cost me rarer severely this time after my cartridge wiped my progress at 90% with only the Arena left, forcing me into a 2nd playthrough. Good job it's an enjoyable game!
