Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX is a remake of SEGA’s classic side scroller that’s being produced by Merge games and set to be released on June 24th, 2021. This is an intriguing move for a number of reasons, chief being the questionable reputation of the original game itself. While Alex Kidd in Miracle was, undoubtedly, a major hit in Europe, Australia, and Brazil....countries where the NES simply never took off....in the US and Japan the game was virtually trounced by the presence of Super Mario Brothers. This wasn’t for arbitrary reasons.

In this video we explore Alex Kidd’s past, and talk about his creator, Kotaro Hayashida, and question whether or not Alex Kidd was ever ACTUALLY a SEGA mascot. We also explore the game and look at how, in 1986, it was truly at the cutting edge of game design while also, somehow, managing to become a master class in how NOT to design an action platformer. And, of course, we look at Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX. Will it be a big hit, like Wonderboy: the Dragon’s Curse or Streets of Rage 4? Or will it be....you know....another Alex Kidd game?
