An Indie, Hack and Slash Archmage Action Roguelike! – Spell Disk Demo –
Spell Disk is an Indie, Hack and Slash Action Roguelike, an Action RPG about bashing and blasting your enemies apart, as you attempt to escape the dungeon.
The random Dungeon born of Procedural Generation!
The Dungeon:
The Dungeons of Spell Disk are procedural, meaning, their layout and room contents are random, so you never know exactly what will await you once you ascent the elevator, what shape of room, what kinds of foes, will there be traps; fun stuff like that to keep you on your toes.
The Combat:
The combat in Spell Disk is Hack and Slash, but there is some real depth here.
You pick your weapon at the start, from 1 of the 2 currently available options in the demo, out of the 7 total weapons available in the full game.
Each of the weapons has its attack style and feel, along with its own special attack off “Y”.
The round katar has a faster attack with a dash attack with a 1 second activation, while the staff has a long charge, cascading fireball attack, with a 2 second charge up.
You also pick one of three available spells, which are also different from each other.
In addition to the weapon abilities and spells, combat in Spell Disk is broken down to Spells; Disks, and Artifacts.
The artifacts are passive buffs, boosts to other aspects of your build, but it is with the interplay between the Spells and the Disks where the real action is.
The Spells: You can bind a spell to your weapon, which allows you to actively use it when it’s off its cooldown, but the most efficient use of spells is via the disks.
The Disks: Thinks of the Disks as triggers.
What Disks do is auto cast their bound spell when their trigger is activated; like melee attacking 4 times will trigger a bound fireball, or casting their bound spell when a spell of a certain type is cast, or when an enemy is within sight.
Disks are very powerful, and combined with the spells, do much to determine your build for the run.
In addition to the weapons, spells, Disks and artifacts, Spell Disk also grants you some good survivability; the mighty dash.
By default, you have a dash with generous I-frames, that has 3 charges, so you have a handy tool to avoid being boxed in monsters, pits, or traps, as the dash can dash right past them.
The Monsters:
The monsters in Spell Disk are varied, and have personality.
The Pixel Graphics work well here: The monsters look bright and vivid, and just pop against their cave like environment.
They look good, and feel good to fight.
These monsters are varied, some spew nasty poison on the ground, mushroom monsters will shot out spores that linger on the map, spiders makes sticky webs to slow you down. All these varied and visually interesting abilities make the environment matter, and encourage the player to watch their step!
Even better, the enemies in Spell Disk have both collision, and no bump damage, so they have to make an attack to actually hurt you!
The enemies get a bright purple outline when they are about to attack, making it very obvious when it is time to move.
Plus, because the enemies in Spell Disk have collision, you can push them around a bit if you want!
Be the bully mage you want to be!
Controller support is present, while currently, in-game mouse support is not.
You can play two hands on keyboard if you wish, but I will be rolling with a gamepad here until mouse support is added.
Note: This is an early look at the demo for Spell Disk, so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Spell Disk is a fun Action Roguelike with fun, easily readable Pixel Graphics and Procedural Dungeon Generation, and is easily worth a wishlist and a watch.
