My name is Fabian and today I am going to show you an app-review of R-Type II. R-Type II is a remake of the shoot'em up classic from 1989. At that time the title appeared for Amiga, Atari and the Gameboy. The classic specialists from DotEmu brought the retro game to the year 2014 and published it for iOS and Android at a price of € 1.79.
The story of R-Type II takes place two years after the events of R-Type I. The attackers of the first part are back - the Bydo empire. The player takes seat in the spacecraft R- 9C, an enhancement from the ship in part one. In terms of gameplay you will hardly notice any differences. You still controls your ship with a finger across the screen. Opponents are blown away by autofire. Those who wish can also activate an alternative control via a digital control pad and fire manually. Now and then a flying a power-up spaceship crosses the screen and you should definitely shoot it to get the power-ups. So you get the typically R-Type drone for your spaceship and more weapons systems. In R-Type II the developers have added a new search laser and the Pulse Laser. If you loose a life you will have to collect all power-ups again and you have to start again from the last checkpoint. So you fire your way through six levels, at the end of each level you can expect a big boss fight.
My conclusion:
R-Type II is very similar to its predecessor. You can expect a very difficult retro shooter. The checkpoints are rare, each collision with walls or enemies deadly and the boss fights are hard. What makes the game even more difficult is the fact, that you loose all power-ups after a death. The touch screen control is also significantly more difficult than the arcade stick or gamepad controlls of the past. The app itself supports controllers, but very few of you are likely to have one and the quality of the available external gamepads are average at best. As a small compensation, the developers included different difficulty levels into the game. In the lightest difficulty level you have infinite lifes. R-Type II is approximately 41 MB in size and has an average rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 in the iOS App Store. Those of you who are interested in well done retro shooters should download the game. Personally, I have enjoyed playing the title 20 years ago. By today's standards, I find the game frustratingly difficult. -
