Broken Sword 5 is the latest installment of the renowned Broken Sword series, which has become famous in Germany under the name Baphomets Fluch. Broken Sword 5 has been developed by Revolution Software with the help of the funding platform Kickstarter. The point and click adventure game has already been available for Windows for several weeks, the iOS-version just conquered the App Store for €4,49. An Android-version will be released in the upcoming six weeks.
The story of Broken Sword 5 begins in Paris - just like in other parts of the Broken Sword-series. The starting point is a gallery where you become the witness of robbery and murder. You play George Stobbart and Nicole Collard, the heroes of the previous Broken Sword-games. In best point and click adventure-style you have to to talk to people, find and combine items and visit numerous locations. You can easily do that with one finger. With a simple tap you move your protagonists. A tap on objects or persons will bring up symbols, that show what you can do with the object or the tapped person. Another tap on the icon performs the desired action. By tapping the bottom left of the screen you can call your inventory and access the settings. If you want to use items from your inventory you simple have to take it with your finger to the place where you would like to use them. In General: The controls work very well and as you would expect from a modern point and click-adventure-game. Occasionally the controls lack a little precision.
The puzzles in Broken Sword 5 are rather simple in nature and can be mastered by constant clicking and thinking. If you have problems anyway you can get help via a well-done hint-system. Parts 1 and 2 of Broken Sword - which are also available for iOS and Android - belong to the best what point & click-adventures have to offer. Parts 3 and 4 were less exciting and provided 3D graphics. The good news: Broken Sword 5 is similar to the parts 1 and 2 and relies on hand-painted backgrounds in a comic look. The Backgorunds look really good on smartphones and tablets. The animations of the characters are a little clunky - and sometimes you have to wait a little bit until some person performs the next action. But due to the fact that Broken Sword 5 is no action-game and more on the slow side, this isn't a problem at all. Special praise goes to the audio-part of the game. While the soundtrack is rather quiet and discreetly matches to the game situations, the English voice acting is fantastic. All texts are spoken by the characters, even with an accent if necassery. In addition Broken Sword 5 offers even a German and a French voice synchronization. The German voice acting is not nearly as good as the English - but there is a German voice-acting if you need it. Furthermore Broken Sword 5 features localized texts in the languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian.
My conclusion:
Broken Sword 5 is a great and enjoyable point and clickadventure. It is maybe not a true masterpiece like the parts one and two and does not feature anything new, but it is great representative of the genre. The graphics are good, the English voice acting is superb and the story is interesting. As usual with the series, the developers have combined true historical details with a fictional story. Some of you might say, that Broken Sword 5 has too little humor or that the puzzles are too easy, but for my taste the developers have done a great job. Broken Sword 5 is split into two episodes. You can download the first episode from the App Store, the second will be published soon. For those of you who like point & click-adventures, I can also recommend the Runaway-Series and The Inner World. -
