Here is a game that has been out for 3 years on the Nintendo Switch, and has been getting some attention lately, and there is one reason why, because this game is ARMS, and the next DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate comes from this game, at the time the character has yet to be announced, but they did say that it could one of these 15 different characters from ARMS.
It has been a long time since I have last played ARMS, so it will take me a while to get used to the controls in this game, this is a fighting game where unlike any other, it is about long-ranged combat with extendable arms.
This playthrough will be about the Grand Prix Mode for ARMS, and I will go through the mode with each character, so starting things off is Spring Man, who is the closest we have to the mascot of ARMS, and he does appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Assist Trophy, and it would be strange to have Spring Man be both a playable character and an Assist Trophy.
Each character in this game have different abilities, for Spring Man, he can parry attacks to give him the additional time to counter his opponents, and if Spring Man's health is below 25%, he will glow red and his ARMS will be permanently charged for the rest of that round, other than that, Spring Man is a well-rounded fighter, so he is balanced in both attacking and defending.
Spring Man's standard ARMS are Toaster, Boomerang, and Tribolt, Toaster is a medium-weight glove with the Fire attribute, some ARMS have different attributes, the Fire attribute will knock down foes, and they will temporarily be set in flames. Boomerang is a Wind attribute of the Curve type, and it is a Medium weight. The Wind attribute blows away fighters a short distance depending on the direction of the punch, and when you use a Rush Attack, which if you fill your Rush Gauge, you can perform a powerful Rush, and with the Boomerang, it can create a large tornado that travels in a curve. Tribolt is a Multi-Shot type ARMS of the Stun attribute, and it is a Light weight ARMS. The Stun attribute will render foes unable to move for a short while, and you can get in a follow up attack while they are stunned. The Tribolt fires missiles for the main attack, so Spring Man does have some good variety in his default ARMS. There is a mode called Get ARMs, where you can earn new ARMS for different characters, so some of them can end up being better than the default ones for each characters. ARMS Institute, the Wiki for ARMS, has some recommended ARMS, so for Spring Man, his default Toaster and Tribolt are there, and another one is Hydra, which is one of Kid Cobra's default ARMS.
In Grand Prix Mode, you go up against 10 fighters, the first match will always take place on your character's home stage, so Spring Man's home stage is Spring Stadium, a flat square shaped stage with trampolines at the edge of the stage, so this does fit Spring Man very well. The next few stages take place on your opponent's home stage. In Round 3 and Round 6, you take on your opponents in either V-Ball, Hoops, and Skillshot, which are based on different sports, V-Ball is basically Volley Ball where you have to score 5 points, and the ball will explode if it hits the ground or after a short while. Hoops is Basketball, but instead of a ball, you have to toss your opponent through the hoop basket, and you have to score 10 points to win. Skillshot is a target game where you have to score more points than the opponent, Get ARMS is also Skillshot, but you don't compete with opponents in that one, but in Skillshot, you do.
After nine rounds, you go up against Max Brass in the final round, but if you play on Level 6 or 7, I believe you would fight Dr. Coyle instead. If you are playing on Level 4 or higher, after beating Max Brass or Dr. Coyle, you get a secret boss fight against Hedlok, which is even more harder of a fight.
If you go through nine rounds without losing a single fight, there is a secret fight, and if you see any cuts, that means I lose a fight against that opponent, as I am playing on Level 4 in this Grand Prix Playthrough. I do like most of the songs in ARMS, so I do wonder which ones could end up in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate once we find out which ARMS fighter ends up being the DLC character and which songs we will get.
