Having dealt with Benjamin Hornigold, Edward sets sail towards the Jamaican island of Long Bay where Roberts and his crew are waiting for him, hauling a mysterious chest with them. As they navigate the island's jungle, Edward eliminates multiple tribal guardians patrolling the island, approaching the ancient structure at the end of the jungle before Roberts and his crew join him with Roberts proceeding to shoot his crewmates dead, claiming that they wouldn't be able to handle what's within the structure before asking Edward to take the chest they were carrying and follow him inside. Edward does so, ultimately learning that the chest contained blood samples taken from Portugese fleet and a crystal skull with the skull being used to power a contraption in the structure which is revealed to be the Observatory itself with Edward and Roberts using it to observe Woodes Rodgers' meeting with Torres as a demonstration of its abilities. Awestruck, Edward proclaims that him and Roberts could become unstoppable with the Observatory only for Roberts to suddenly double-cross him, pushing him into the water below the Observatory, revealing that he simply used Edward to enter the Observatory more easily. Intending to pursue him, Edward finds his way out of the structure and ends up injured as he impales himself on a branch while sliding down the hill near the structure. Upon dragging himself to the beach where Roberts' crew is preparing for departure, Edward sees Jackdaw sailing away. Enraged, he attempts to confront Roberts but soon collapses due to blood loss from his injury with Roberts revealing his intention to hand Edward over to British colonial authorities in Jamaica and let him be imprisoned and eventually executed for his crimes.

In 2013, Abstergo researcher wakes up in an unknown room, being greeted by Melanie Lemay who has contacted him via television in the room, explaining that him and other Sample 17 project staff have been knocked out and placed under lockdown in the bunker complex located below Abstergo Entertainment building due to multiple security breaches that researcher has perpetrated under John's instructions, ubenknownst to her and due to Olivier Garneau's disappearance in Chicago two days prior. However, he was left with Animus workstation in order to continue with his research of Edward Kenway's genetic memories with Melanie wishing him luck in his future explorations. Immediately afterwards, researcher is contacted by John who grants him a higher security clearance so that he'd be able to leave his room and enter the building's central server located nearby, ostensibly in order to erase all evidence of his hacking activities performed over the course of previous several weeks. After helping John get Melanie out of the room, researcher heads in himself and successfully gains access to the building's central server, being greeted by hologram-like female face that talks to him, claiming to not be ready to return into physical shape yet before disappearing, much to John's rage as he claims that the mysterious woman was supposed to possess the researcher's body once he'd hack into the server...
