Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1070 - FPS Test and Settings
Greetings, everyone.
Today we’re re-testing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, on my Ryzen 5 3600 and GTX 1070. My current PC specs are as follows:
-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB.
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 442.19.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S. and game), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB.
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2.
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.
When the game launched I tested it on my old i5 4690k, and mostly the game ran decently, but there were obvious slowdowns in certain places, villages or cities especially, where the CPU was being quite loaded. The Anvil Next 2 engine that powers up AC Odyssey is a bit core/thread hungry, as we already saw with AC Origins before Odyssey too, so it was no surprise that Odyssey needed more threads to perform in a more optimal way all the time.
Still, with my 4690K I was able to enjoy the game at capped 60 FPS on most situations, since the game is mostly go from place to place in a huge open world, and there were no major performance issues there, except when running around big places full of NPCs, like Athens. Now, with the Ryzen 5 3600, this changes a lot, since the game is now smoother in general, and there are no big FPS drops when running around the big city.
Also, as we see in the video, my old benchmarks’ frame-time graphs are in fact worse, which means that even when I got the same average FPS back then, than now (in some of the presets this happens), the frame-times are so much better now than then, and that translates into a more smooth gameplay experience, especially when playing with unlimited frame rates.
All in all, a game that struggle a little bit in certain places (but was not totally unplayable), is now super smooth, and with a medium range GPU today (even stronger than the 1070 too) I’m pretty sure 6 cores are more than enough for this game. In any case, at least Odyssey (and Origins too) was a game that launched in a somewhat decent state, despite the usual isolated rants from some people that hate Denuvo, the engine used by the game simply scales to more than 4 cores, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t playable at launch (unlike…you know, RDR2 xD).
