Borderlands 3 - Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1070 - FPS Test and Settings
Greetings, everybody.
Continuing with my recent re-testing of some of the games I’ve checked in the past, today’s the turn of Borderlands 3, on my current Ryzen 3600 setup, which is the following:
-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB.
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 441.87.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S. and game), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB.
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2.
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.
The first thing I wanted to test myself was I DX12 was improved in this game since it launched, but it seems it hasn’t; it still takes long to load when switching to this API, and then the performance is not as good as DX11. I don’t get too in-depth into min, 1% low FPS etc. unless I clearly notice something wrong, so I don’t think DX12 is any good here, or does anything that DX11 cannot do just about the same if not better, so yeah, DX11 it is then.
As usual, we tested from Very Low to Badass settings, and just like on my release week videos with my 4690K, most of the same still applies when it comes to settings: Volumetrics and Material Complexity are GPU intensive options that should still be tuned down, preferably to Medium. The Volumetric Lighting in the game does improve at High and Ultra settings, I can notice the visual enhancement, but the cost is still too much for the 1070 to handle in certain areas.
In general, the R5 3600 shows clear improvements over my old 4690K when it comes to overall frame stability and smoothness, also when loading areas full of NPCs like Sanctuary III, where I’m not noticing any of the load-stutter I used to see with my old setup. Whether this is a consequence of any patches or the CPU, I’m not sure, but I can say I have absolutely zero stutters with this new setup.
