DOOM - Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1070 - FPS Test and Settings
Greetings, everybody.
Today we’re (re)testing DOOM from 2016 once again this time on my new Ryzen 5 3600 and good old GTX 1070. My current PC specs are the following:
-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB.
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 442.19.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S.), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB (game’s here)
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2.
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.
As I already knew from playing this game a million times, past and present, DOOM is a great performing game, it ran very well on my i5 4690K PC, with the 1070 too back in the day, and it still runs pretty amazingly. The R5 3600 provides some extra CPU power so I can get even higher frame-rates than before, but still the game was usually always above 120 FPS on my i5 PC.
The Vulkan API is the one we have to thank for this (and of course the developers), and we can see in the video that OpenGL isn’t cutting it anymore for these types of games, the performance differential from Vulkan to OpenGL on the same graphical settings is like 20 to 30% and even more at times, so much that it is even comparable to the performance loss we can get going from 1080p to 1440p on Vulkan.
I am pretty excited for next month when DOOM Eternal comes out, after having been delayed, and from the recent gameplay avalanche we’ve been getting from several youtubers I can see that my excitement is quite solid, and well placed: the game is looking awesome, amazing graphics with even faster and dynamic gameplay than ever, and it looks like id Tech 7 is going to deliver new heights of quality and performance for the Vulkan API on the PC. Cant’ wait, and you bet I’ll be giving Eternal a good proper testing, for sure.
