The first Atlas Diesel Locomotive model to join my fleet and I am very impressed with the detail, performance and quality that Atlas adds into their model locomotives. This one is quite hard to find as this is the first Amtrak Phase V model to join my fleet and the model in the review is the GE Dash 8-32BHW (also known as the B32-8WH as well) Diesel Locomotive which the detail is simply beautiful on this model. Performance is excellent at all speeds right down to a crawl. The model is DCC ready and only requires an 8-pin decoder to plug in and you're all set. The majority of the parts are factory fitted although the end balcony rails will need to be fitted by the user and I have already done this prior to the review. There is a partition in the box that comes out which allows the model to placed into the box with the end balcony rails fitted so that no damage occurs when placing the model into the styrene box. So Atlas, well done for thinking this through as you have put a lot of thought into the model and the packaging as well which is not done by model train makers. The model has working head and ditch lights as well which are just right in my opinion and the road number on this model is #517. I am planning to seek the same type of model as #508 as soon as I can find one. 517 is seen here in the video hauling two Walthers Amtrak Phase IVb "Horizon" carriages which is a "work in progress" as I plan to make either a 7 or an 8 car consist as soon as I can find them and in my opinion, these passenger cars fit nicely with the Dash 8 locomotive. The train in the background is a BNSF freight train which motive power is from a Kato GE AC4400CW #5615 and a Kato SD40-2 #6340 which fits in nicely with the "California" theme I think. Meanwhile sticking on topic, if you can one of these models, I would recommend getting it because they are impressive models from Atlas and the Amtrak Phase V versions are quite hard to find nowadays.
