Baldur's Gate 2 Legacy of Bhaal Difficulty Guide Part 10 - Rescue from Spellhold
4Now that we've completed all of the side quests from Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, it's time to finally advance the main plot and head to Spellhold to rescue Imoen. Because we delayed this section of the game for so long, we're a bit overpowered and the battles in this episode will be much easier than the previous episode. However, there are several very powerful items that we can acquire as we make our way through this section.
The first choice we have to make comes when we enter the dream sequence and are forced to reduce one of four attributes. For this build, we can sacrifice Intelligence, which we only need when fighting Mind Flayers. Next, we face the essence of Bhaal in a one-on-one battle. During one-on-one battles, we get tremendous value out of Damage Resistance. We can use Defender of Easthaven, Helmet of Dumathoin, and Armor of Faith to increase our DR to 38%. Fractional damage is always rounded down, so with this, we can Tank the Bhaal essence and escape the dream sequence.
When we return to the waking world, we have lost our Bhaalspawn powers, but we have reunited with Imoen. Nalia can be swapped out for Imoen if you desire, but power gamers would pick Nalia over Imoen due to her unique ring. While Nalia has fewer levels in Thief, we can always use potions and items to buff Nalia's thievery skills when necessary.
Progress through the dungeon, securing the Bag of Holding on the first floor of Bodhi's dungeon. When we encounter Bodhi, there is a scripted event where the main character transforms into a Slayer, and attacks friend and foe alike. For this encounter, we have Darksbane attack alone. Bodhi will retreat shortly after Darksbane transforms and the Slayer will passively wait with no enemies in sight.
As we make our way through the dungeon we secure several Mithral tokens. With 20 of these, we can use the machine on Level 3 to exchange 15 for Boots of Speed and the remaining 5 for Boots of the North. Further, when we are tested at the end of the dungeon, choosing the "correct" path eventually leads to a large table with the Cloak of Reflection. This item reflects Electrical attacks back to the wearer, so we'll definitely want that as we escape.
When the time comes to battle Irenicus, the strategy is simple: we shut down his spell-casting with focused attacks, interrupting his spells. The main threat in this encounter however is the numerous murderers who attempt to backstab us. Once Irenicus is sufficiently damaged, the dialogue will trigger and Irenicus will escape. At that point our party will retreat, avoiding battling the murderers altogether.
As we escape Spellhold, we can choose to progress immediately to the Underdark or make a deal with Saemon to leave on his ship. We will choose Saemon, as not only does that yield the Silver Blade from Saemon, which can later be used to forge a powerful weapon, but we also get access to an additional quest and area.
When we arrive at the City of Caverns, we head to the jaws in the middle of the city. There we will be ambushed, but one of the attackers will drop the Cloak of Mirroring, which grants immunity to damaging spells. Finally, to complete this chapter, we must defeat one of two rival leaders. A full squad of Skeleton Warriors with all the standard buffs will defeat either leader and allow us to advance to Chapter 5.
