Baldur's Gate 2 Legacy of Bhaal Difficulty Guide Part 5 - Fighting Undead
14After completing Nalia's quest in her families keep, our party has secured the required gold necessary to advance the main story into Chapter 3. It's best to do this quickly, as the initial quests in the next chapter are relatively easy but very rewarding. Since we have Keldorn in our party it's best that we reject Bodhi's offer and align ourselves with the Shadow thieves, which means we will be facing Bohdi and her vampires along with other powerful undead.
The first quest for the Shadow Thieves has you facing Lassal. Vampires have powerful level drain abilities, so it's best to keep your party members out of melee range of these enemies. We will use Jaheria's summoned Nymph's to hold aggro against Lassal, and utilize their Call Lightning spells to get some elemental damage in. Darksbane can also provide some elemental damage with Flame Strike. Lassal won't be killed but will retreat as a gaseous cloud once we've done enough damage.
Completing the next quest for the Shadow Thieves involves fighting some relatively mundane enemies, but the xp rewards are enough to get level-ups from Darksbane, Keldorn, and Valygar. Darksbane's level-up is most notable as Cleric Level 10 reactivates his previous Berserker levels, meaning Darksbane now has better THAC0, APR, and Grandmastery with Flails. Darksbane can also now swap out Flame Strike for Righteous Magic, which when combined with Draw Upon Holy Might, gives Darksbane the maximum 25 Strength, increasing his THAC0 and Damage further. When fully buffed with divine magic and hasted, Darksbane turns into a powerhouse who reliably hits with the Flail of Ages, triggering Slow on enemies. Slow is particularly powerful as it reduces cast time, attack speed, and defense for enemies.
Once we've penetrated Bodhi's Lairs, Valygar can use his stealth abilities to steal the Mace of Distruption without further combat. This powerful weapon forces undead to save against death at -4 against each successful hit, which is why we took a proficiency point in Mace during Darksbane's earlier cleric levels.
To demonstrate this weapon, we'll stop advancing the main quest and go back to side-questing. Hexxat's quest is particularly rewarding so it's best that we tackle that next. Let's give Keldorn a day off with his family and have "Hexxat" fill his role while we complete her quest. When facing Dragomir. we buff up Darksbane once again to increase his APR and THAC0 and then equip him with the Mace of Disruption. Nalia uses Greater Malison to reduce Dragomir's saving throws and he quickly falls to the on-hit effect of hte Mace. After a brief cutscene the party is awarded Dragomir's Respite, which acts as a bag of holding. This item will remove any inventory management issues for the rest of the series and is well worth securing early.
