Baldur's Gate 2 Legacy of Bhaal Difficulty Guide Part 9 - Twisted Rune, Kangaxx & Bodhi
It's almost time to leave Athkatla, but before we do, there is some high-level equipment we'll want to secure. The first two items we need can be bought at the Adventurer's Mart. Firstly, we can purchase the Robe of Vecna, which is the best-in-slot item for Mages and provides Armor Class and Magic Resistance. Its real value, however, lies in lowering cast time. This is invaluable as it allows you to quickly cast buffs or control spells right at the start of fights when you need them most. The next item we'll want to purchase is Vhailor's Helm. This helm provides Armor Class and allows one cast per day of the wizard spell Simulacrum. Simulacrum is an extremely powerful spell that allows you to create a clone of your character, complete with all their spells, equipment, and items.
With these two items secured, we are ready to take on the Twisted Rune hideout. This fight can be very challenging, but it becomes much more manageable if we aggro each Twisted Rune member individually. We keep the majority of the party back and have Keldorn use our new helm to cast Simulacrum, as we'll need two casts of Sunray from Daystar. Keldorn's clone can use Daystar to Sunray the Lich, defeating him. The fighter we face next is easy enough to defeat with conventional tactics. The Beholder can also be defeated easily by using the Shield of Balduran, which we used in past episodes to reflect Beholder attacks back at them. Next, we face the Vampire, so we can use the original Keldorn to cast Sunray. However, because she has high saving throws, I recommend using Nalia's Greater Malison on her first. The final member of the Twisted Rune is a mage who has invisibility, so be sure to use Keldorn's True Sight ability, she also has very high-level spells, including Time Stop. Our strategy here is an all-out attack to interrupt her spells and prevent her from casting anything. Defeating the Twisted Rune yields the Staff of the Magi, the best-in-slot weapon for Mages as it provides AC, Invisibility, Saving Throws, Immunity to Charm, Protection vs Evil, plus one daily cast of Spell Trap and three daily casts of a unique Fireball + Lightning Bolt Combo Spell.
With this weapon, we are now ready to face Kangaxx. Kangaxx is a powerful lich, and while we can use Daystar's Sunray attack to defeat its first form like we can with other liches, its 2nd Demilich form is much more challenging. As a Demilich, Kangaxx is immune to all spells as well as any weapons lower than +4. Certain destroy-on-hit weapons like the Improved Mace of Disruption and Azuredge can work on Kangaxx. However, depending on your choices, you may not have upgraded the Mace of Disruption, and we don't have a character with Axe proficiency in this party. Our strategy instead will be to use Daystar once again with Keldorn. We begin the battle by buffing Keldorn's THAC0 with Bless and Chant, then using a Protection from Undead Scroll, and casting Improved Haste on Keldorn. With Protection from Undead, Keldorn will be immune to Kangaxx's attacks, and Kangaxx will instead cast Imprisonment on the next nearest party member. We position Nalia to get Kangaxx's attention and have her use her new staff to cast Spell Trap. Spell Trap will block Kangaxx's spell and absorb the energy to refill her spell slots, allowing her to regain the cast of Improved Haste. When Spell Trap expires, Nalia follows up with Spell Immunity: Abjuration, which also blocks Imprisonment. Have Nalia recast Improved Haste when necessary, and Keldorn's repeated attacks will eventually defeat Kangaxx, yielding the Ring of Gaxx. The Ring of Gaxx provides AC, and it does stack with magic armors, as well as saving throws and magic resistance, immunity to diseases and poison, and regeneration.
Finally, we take on Bodhi, which, after defeating the Twisted Rune and Kangaxx, is a piece of cake. Summons and standard buffs are more than enough to bring her down, allowing us to finish the main plot of Chapter 3. After we return to the Shadow Thieves, we get a large XP reward and set sail to Spellhold to rescue Imoen.
