Welcome to a new series exploring another Western RPG classic, Biowares' Dragon Age: Origins. In this guide, we'll be playing as a support mage to defend and support the party with spells. The first boss of this game is Gazarath in the Korcari Wilds which allows for a demonstration of threat management. The first step in this build is to complete the Mind Blast tree and secure access to the spell Crushing Prison. Crushing Prison is an excellent crowd control spell but it also has a hidden mechanic in that it generates 100 Threat. Threat is the measure of aggro in DA:O and this causes Gazarth to ignore the front liners and focus on our player character. Normally, this would be a major problem for our unarmored mage, but in the same tree, Crushing Prison is Mind Blast, which has another hidden mechanic in that it resets Threat to 0, causing Gazarath to switch targets.

This tactic will allow you to occupy Gazarath's time while the rest of your party does damage. Additionally in the Mind Blast Tree is Telekinetic Weapons, which we activate to increase the armor penetration to the whole party and increase our damage. Finally, ensure your Rogue is positioned to take advantage of backstab and use Shield Bash and Sword Pommel to chain stuns on Gazarath.

Finally, this build takes Heal early on which is used as an emergency if needed.
