Dragon Age: Origins Nightmare Support Mage - Ostagar
11Welcome to a new series exploring another Western RPG classic, Biowares' Dragon Age: Origins. In this guide, we'll be playing as a support mage to defend and support the party with sustained abilities. The first priority of this build is the sustained ability of Miasma, which grants a flat penalty to defense and a bonus to enemies in it's AoE and can also slow any enemies who fail to resist it. The second priority is Telekinetic weapons, which grants Armor penetration and consequentially DPS for the whole party.
The first boss of this game is Gazarath in the Korcari Wilds. The key to successfully defeating this enemy is to chain various crowd control abilities. Our PC character can use Paralyze, which we unlock on the way to unlocking Miasma, to stun the Gazarath at the start of combat. We want to ensure our Rogue is positioned behind the enemy so his attacks trigger Backstabs, granting a 50% increase to damage. Once Paralyze expires, we can use the party members' stun abilities, chaining Shield Bash, Dirty Fighting, and Pommel Strike, we can prevent Gazarath from attacking for as long as possible. Once Gazarath reaches melee range we can further debuff him with a Weakness spell which further reduces his Attack and Defense. By the time Gazarath can damage the party he should be significantly weakened and focus fire will bring a swift victory.
The second boss is the Ogre on the top of the Tower of Ishal which grants an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Threat management. The Ogre is a powerful enemy with attacks that can quickly kill a party, however it can be easily manipulated into attacking your tank. The temporary Soldier party member that the game provides a mage character during this quest conveniently has access to the Taunt skill. The Taunt skills provides 300 Threat, which causes the Ogre to focus all his attacks on the Taunting Soldier. We combine this with the Force Field spell which we unlock on the way to unlocking Telekinetic weapons. Force Field prevents a character from doing any damage, but it also prevents any damage inflicted upon it. When combined with Taunt, the Ogre will continue to attack the Soldier regardless, allowing the rest of the party to attack in relative safety.
