Baldur's Gate (Gameplay #2)
For the relatively unexperienced RPG gamer, Baldur's Gate can be quite a challenge initially (as it was for me back in 1998-1999 when I first played it). In keeping with D&D tradition, low-level characters are extremely weak and Bioware sure didn't make things easier by populating the first wilderness areas with hungry wolves, bands of hobgoblins and even a few especially hard-hitting ogres. As if that wasn't enough, the comforting safety of the Friendly Arms Inn can not be reached at all before first having defeated a nasty spellcasting assassin.
While it isn't always uncomplicated to do, resisting the urge to explore *everything* - and thus not stray too far from the main story path and/or the major NPC-related quests - is probably the best approach very early on. The kobolds in Nashkel Mines and gnolls at Gnoll Fortress can be dangerous in large packs, but they're at least considerably easier than the nasty vampiric wolves and ogre berserkers roaming the countryside. That being said, while going through the game a second time (or third, or forth etc.), part of the fun is to see just what kind of enemies you can actually defeat with a pathetic level 1 or 2 party...
