After having reached level 27 and played for about 40 hours, I finished my first playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas on Hardcore difficulty by following the New California Republic story path to its conclusion. Many of my issues with Fallout 3 remain problems in New Vegas as well; such as terrible friendly AI, boring treks across empty terrain, a tiresome "bullet spunge" approach to designing challenging enemy encounters as well as repetitive indoor environments. And although I've only experienced a few crashes and no quest-breaking bugs whatsoever, I hear the console versions of the game in particular are plagued by inexcusable technical problems.

On balance, though, I still believe the new Fallout game is a significant if not exactly revolutionary step in the right direction. For all their obvious flaws as a developer, at the end of the day Obsidian were actually able to improve upon the basic open world RPG concept and implement it more successfully than Bethesda did with Oblivion and Fallout 3. New Vegas' pacing and main quest is genuinely compelling and much better structured than in the earlier Gamebryo-based games, the environments are a lot more varied and imaginatively designed this time around, the additional crafting elements together with the Hardcore mode add an extra layer of depth to the gameplay and the writing, dialogue and voice acting are all miles ahead of anything that Zenimax studio has ever produced.

All taken together, these changes make New Vegas a surprisingly satisfying experience, and thus this game marks the first time in more than a decade that I *didn't* grow tired of a Bethesda-related title long before finishing its main quest. In fact, I'd even like to see what the Legion story path is like as well as become acquainted with the various companions I didn't even get a chance to meet during this playthrough...
