Previously, the group arrives on Brynnlaw and finished recovering from the recent vampire attack led by Saemon who fled the scene immediately. There was still the matter of accessing Spellhold however, and luckily for Shadow, there was one man who could help by the name of Sanik. He would not help however as his wife was being held hostage by her abusive mistress. With that accomplished, they reached Imoen but she looked to be a husk of her former self. Shadow demanded the Coordinator to give him answers, but as it turned out, the Coordinator was Irenicus himself all along, and revealed that Yoshimo the thief was his spy the entire time. Captured once more, Irenicus performed one last test for forced Shadow to enter his own psyche where he was being drained of his divine essence in the meantime. He meets Bhaal face to face but realized that it was mearely an illusion somewhat warning him that with his soul gone, the instinct, or the 'Taint' would soon overwhelm him. Bodhi then takes everyone to an unknown place, her maze as she claims it, and forces him and everyone else to play along in her game of cat and mouse. Uneasiness befell Shadow as he failed to realize the Taint was creeping about within him. Will he be able to fight it and escape the clutches of his enemy yet again, or will he fall to the influence and become something more than himself and thus endanger his group?
