BALLOON FIGHT - (NES) - RELEASED JUNE 18TH, 1986

So maybe this one's overdue, maybe not? I figured I'd go through the titles on the NES Classic. Alphabetically, there's question that 'Balloon Fight' would go first. I don't have much of a connection to this game. The only time I played it as a child was when I went on this weird cruise, around age 10 or 11. They had a couple of arcade games on the ship, including Balloon Fight. I remember, after I put in my quarter, this kid came up to me and gestured to the two-player option.

Balloon Fight was released for the NES on June 18th 1986, making it the 24th licensed NES game in the US and the first game to get a solo launch date. Of those 24 games, 17 were the original NES launch titles that were released the previous October. Then, three games were released both on June 1st and June 6th. Then we got Balloon Fight.

Playing it for even a minute or so, you can see virtually all that Balloon Fight has to offer. The premise is that you're a kid, with a couple of balloons tied to your helmet, which crudely gives you the ability to fly when you flap your arms. Your enemies have the same setup, however they only have one balloon. The goal is to clear the stage of all enemies by popping their balloons and simultaneously avoiding obstacles.

The game has 12 unique phases and three bonus rounds, which take place after every third phase. After the twelfth phase, the counter will continue, however it will merely cycle between phases 4-12. I was pleased to get a perfect score on the final bonus round.

In addition to the one and two-player modes, there is also an additional single-player game called 'Balloon Trip'. The goal is to avoid the lightning sparks and collect the balloons, aiming to move up the ranks and compete for the high score. The player starts with one life.
