SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 - (NES) - RELEASED FEBRUARY 12TH, 1988 (USA)

LONG overdue! LONG. I have not done an NES game in quite a long time (unless you count FF PR ports of 'Final Fantasy' & 'Final Fantasy III', which you probably don't). But I started thinking about this game as Mario Day, March 10th (MAR 10), passed by. I still haven't forgotten about the other games I'm in the middle of playing ('New Super Mario Bros. U' for 'Wii U' and 'Advance Wars' for 'Game Boy Advance'), but there's just something nice about quick NES game. Normally, I've shied away from recording playthroughs of longer NES games, but with the computer I bought last year and the RAM upgrade I gave it this year, longer games are no longer an issue for me.

What I particularly love about this game is that it's such a big leap forward compared to SMB1 & SMB2 (the real one). But not only that, the improvements in graphics and gameplay arguably helped Super Mario Bros. cross over to the deep, deep mainstream. SMB3 is not unique in this respect. There are other pivotal titles in many Nintendo IPs that also went through this transition. Mega Man 1 didn't sell too well. Luckily, the took what worked in the first game, removed what didn't and we got the classic 'Mega Man 2', arguably one of the best games in the franchise.

SMB1 and SMB2 were still widely popular, don't get me wrong. But SMB3 is the third best-selling NES game of all time. The top two were SMB and Duck Hunt, which we know were included with many NES console bundles. So in a very real sense, SMB3 is the best-selling NES game of all time!

This is the first SMB title to have worlds, where you don't just automatically launch into a stage and proceed in progression. You get to actually pick what level you want to play from what's currently available and you get a break in between levels. Furthermore, the power-up catalogue was expanded beyond the traditional trio of mushroom, fire flower and invincible star. New power-ups that were introduced to the game were: the Super Leaf, the Tanooki Suit, the Magic Wing, the Frog Suit, the Hammer Suit, and the Goomba's Shoe. It's also the first game to allow you to accumulate power-ups in an inventory and allow you to use them in-between levels.

I could spend all day talking about the reasons I love this game. But really, this game speaks for itself. If you're capable of still playing it somehow (emulator, virtual console, legit cartridge, etc) and have not done so in your life, you owe it to yourself to take a tour of another tour of the Mushroom Kingdom. You're gonna love it!
