The capitalist nation of Randa has long had a history of excellence in the creation of aircraft, attracting the best of engineers in aerodynamics, artillery, and structuring from the world over. Once, even this interest had waned, until the creation of the air show Bakraid, in which the capabilities of the fighters could be demonstrated outside of simulations for all to see.

Around the time of the seventh Bakraid, a nearby nation, Deneb, had attained an expansionist attitude, forcibly subjugating and annexing several of its neighbors with the assistance of the Shtarterra Security Council. Recently, Deneb has asked to participate in Bakraid. Randa's defense council, perfectly aware that this was just a pretext for Deneb to get its and the SSC's engines of war into Randan borders and more easily prosecute their war from there, give their blessing. However, the council secretly contacts the other Bakraid participants, offering even more prize money than normal if they will perform in a special version of Bakraid - genuine war conditions. In other words, use their own top-of-the-line planes to shatter Deneb's schemes. In all, nine pilots accept this plan, and begin Bakraid two weeks early to catch Deneb unaware.

Battle Bakraid brings back the gameplay systems of Battle Garegga, along with some of the additions from Armed Police Batrider as well as a few new things. In addition to the regular shots ships now have a Side Shot, a secondary weapon which is powered up by a separate item from the regular, frontal-firing weapon. Bakraid brings back the option formations from Garegga, with ships now being able to carry up to six options at a time, as well as the charged shots from Batrider. Like in Batrider the player can lower rank by grazing bullets, though this time it is much more manageable due to the ships large sprites.

Scoring works the same way as before, with the addition of a new Multiplier System which alters the amount of points gained from enemy destruction by modifying the base point gain with a specially acquired incremental multiplier. The multiplier system in essence features an incremental multiplier that is gained by destroying large enemies. The player can continue to increment the multiplier up to a max of 64x, upon which the game will trigger the 100k points medals if the player has its medal wave maxed out. The player can only trigger the 100k points medals when it has a multiplier active, and can only continue to release 100k points medals if it continues to keep a multiplier going. Once the player loses a multiplier, the medals revert back to 10k points medals.

There are two separate values determining the rank in Battle Bakraid. One value determines only the starting rank and has no further effect on the gameplay (START RANK in the dip switch settings). This value is the same for Training and Normal mode. After the player has started a run, the rank is then gradually increasing determined by another value, which is the per frame rank increase (TIMER RANK in the dip switch settings).

The starting rank of the first credit after boot-up is always 14,221,312 (D90,000 in hex) on default settings regardless of the Course you choose (the game checks for the starting rank value of Normal Course). The starting rank of all succeeding runs actually depends solely on the Course selection of the previous run. If your previous run was on Normal Course, the starting rank of your next run is the value of Normal Course regardless whether you have selected Training Course, Advanced Course, or Only Boss Course. However, if your previous run was on Advanced Course instead, the starting rank of your next run is the value of Advanced Course regardless whether you have selected Training Course, Normal Course, or Only Boss Course.

The minimum rank cap behaves in exactly the same way. The first run after boot-up will always start with a minimum rank cap of 16,252,928 (F80,000 in hex) on default settings regardless of the Course you choose.

Therefore, you get a lower starting rank and a lower minimum rank cap for Advanced Course and Only Boss Course when you reset the PCB after each credit (or play a run of Training or Normal Course first). If you choose to continuously play Training or Normal Course, shutting down the PCB has no advantage.

The Unlimeted Version come with all the secret ships unlocked and the 64,000,000 score upper limit removed.
