BattleTanx: Global Assault (PS1)
This video was captured using the actual game on an actual Sony Playstation. Loading times and most story sequences have been removed for your consideration and enjoyment as well as for overall pacing of the video.
The first installment of Battle Tanx was exclusive to the N64, but the second installment got a release on both the N64 and the Playstation. So the first thing people probably want to know is which one is better. It's kinda hard to judge which one is better since both installments are very different from each other. They both have the exact same story except for the Playstation version tells the story in CGI format and fills you in on the rest in the loading screens. Other than the story being the same the level designs and layouts are different. If you see my capture of the N64 version you will see that they're almost completely different games. Additionally the Playstation version's controls aren't nearly as fast and as fun as the N64's and the frame rate is pretty jumpy. If you have a first generation Playstation like I do the frame rate is downright awful. I had to switch my early Playstation out for my later model to capture this because it was pretty bad. Also the sound isn't nearly as good which is surprising since the PS1 almost always had better sound over the N64. In this case your turret gun isn't nearly as loud and punchy and the music isn't as well done as it was on the N64. Also the music in the PS1 version seems to play when it feels like it. There's not even any music in the main menu screen! The graphics IMO don't look as good on the PS1 as they do on the N64 with the exception of the fire effects on the PS1 version which do look good.
So again, which one is better? After playing the N64 version it is quite daunting to play the PS1 version right after since the PS1's controls are so slow. You can completely spin your turret about 2 to 3 times on the N64 for every one revolution on the PS1. Your tank also travels at like half the speed as well. When it comes to pure gameplay the clear winner is the N64. However as I said earlier, these games are almost completely different so picking a clear winner is impossible to do since the PS1 version is still a game worth picking up and fun on it's own merit. So I recommend picking up both. This game doesn't seem to demand much money as I have found it in quite a few stores for under five bucks.
