Beacon , Gorgeous Alien Rogue-like with Optimization Issues
Disclosure: This game copy was bought by the reviewer.
Gorgeous looking environments, amazing atmosphere, and a wide range of mutations that expire over multiple runs (stat and special abilities triggered) are ultimately brought down by optimization issues that make reaching 60 FPS on the lowest settings impossible. This wouldn't be such an issue if the combat relied too heavily on reliable movement and bullet dodging, made awkward by the fixed camera angle. It also makes dodging a ripe pain and basic movement over narrow walkways prone to falling off. Weapons and gadget variety are great with the gene types offering a solid bonus to help with runs. There are five levels (they look to be randomly generated, but I ran into similar layouts a couple of times through my 20 runs so far) with enemy numbers increasing as you progress. Side caches, hidden areas, and bosses can populate the levels, providing critical gear. One side note is the character look changing over time depending on the mutations.
Final verdict for now is too hold off for a performance improvement. While the first few levels are playable on the lowest setting (rocking Hyperthreading, 2080 Ti and plenty of RAM), the amount of projectiles in the third to fifth levels mixed with the low frame rate equate to a rough time. They have the visuals down and a good core structure to the rogue-like elements at least.
