I've created two materials in Blender, one for the buttons/knobs and one for the base. Then I unwrap everything into one UV map and arrange the UV islands.

In Substance Painter, I bake the mesh maps and then begin the texturing of the base and the various buttons and knobs. I make use of the seams that were created in Blender to help me add a white material to the ends of the buttons and knobs. I do the indents for where the buttons and knobs would be recessed into the base, add dirt and scratches and a nice blurred shine on the square buttons.

I think I should point out that you (and I) ought to be judicious in our use of dirt and scratches. I have a tendency to go overboard when I make my videos and have to go back (sometimes) and tone it down a little. Just think of the environment ... inside a submarine there would probably be more dust than dirt, so keep that in mind.

I have difficulty nailing down the base colour that I really want when I do my videos so I may go back and tweak that along with a few other things.

I did two things wrong in this video, or at least two things I would like to do differently. The button surround, as I call it, that encompasses the square buttons was too deep for my liking so I may change that. And the button indents around the square buttons was done on the same layer as all the other indents and I should have done those on a separate layer because the alpha I used on those square button indents was very "square" and so I wanted to try the bevel filter and see if that would help us get a nicer look. I will try to show you that in the next video. Alternatively, I may want to just make a more round square (does that make sense?) and re-do those indents.

Anyhow, we are quite far along and after some tweaking, including moving the square buttons down into the base a little and adding some text, I believe we will have a decent looking Device 2.

Thanks for watching and hope you will continue to follow along with this series as we wrap up this object and move to the next in the Kursk submarine control room.
