This video features the boss fight against the Shadow of Yharnam in the Forbidden Woods area from Bloodborne on new game plus mode.
The threee shadows are a huge jump in difficulty from the previous bosses (especially if you faced the Witch of Hemwick optional boss earlier, who is arguably the easiest fight in the whole game) and the only boss I had serious troubles with during new game plus: it's one of the few bosses where you have to take care of two or more enemies at once and it's very easy to get pinned down by all three shadows at the same time. It doesn't help that the boss comes right after the Forbidden Woods, arguably one of the hardest/more annoying areas to navigate from Bloodborne.
This is the strategy I've used to deal with the Shadow of Yharnam (keep in mind that it's only one from the many you could use):
- First of all, lock on and deal with the shadow wielding the Chikage-like katana. On top of its attacks being the easiest to parry, this shadow gains a nasty ranged strike in phase two, so you may want to deal with it first. The shadow wielding a scimitar and a candle is very easy to ignore in this phase (only, watch out if it begins spitting fire at you because that attack can stunlock you): as with the caster shadow, use the cover provided by the large and small tombstones to defend yourself from its fireballs while you deal with the other shadow. Be extremely careful, however, because the fireballs have a tendency to home on you.
When the first shadow will reach a third of its original health, all the sadows will start twitching in pain and snakes will erupt from them, beginning phase two. Now you may want to kill off the katana-wielding shadow as fast as possible: as seen in the video, you can get a visceral attack on it easily by performing a heavy attack from behind as it's transphorming
- After killing the first shadow, concentrate on the scimitar and candle equipped shadow as you continue dodging the other shadow's fireballs. You can parry its scimitar swings easily and dish out powerful visceral attacks. If you are really having trouble with the caster shadow, you can also try to get it first. In this phase the shadows gain new attacks: the only ones you want to watch out for are the ranged trust from the katana-wielding shadow (if you didn't get it first) and the caster shadow new fireballs from above
- After killing the second shadow, the remaining shadow will enter the last phase of the fight and gain the ability to summon huge snakes from the ground that will home onto you if far away or try to snatch you if close. During a normal playthrought and even in new game plus they have a good chance to one-shoot you. If you followed my strategy now you just have to deal with the caster shadow: if you keep up your pressure on it with melee strikes it won't be able to cast its fireballs or summon the giant snakes, allowing you to finish it off easily. It will also try to strike you with its Tonitrus in close quarters, but this attacks is rather predictable and parried easily
Keep also in mind that the all the three shadows are vulnerable to bolt damage, so the Tonitrus and paper bolt are extremely effective. The Shaman Bone Blade also works on all three bosses, allowing you both to have more space and severely damage them
