In order for me to rant/ramble about this video, I will be mentioning some spoilers along the way so, if you haven’t played/seen this section before and wish to not have anything spoiled then you should stop reading this now. So, after spending a little longer in that last map than I wanted to, we finally find our way to the top of that structure (I don’t remember them explaining what it is or how it is tied with the Guardians) as well as the entrance to the Vault. We get this cool animation of being teleported into the vault itself (You’ll get to see it a few times because I suck at the game); I think the vaults in the previous games were actually places that we had to open up (The one from the first game was a portal that opened up to reveal the Destroyer while the second game had a legit vault underground, I think. God I have a bad memory). The fight itself took me a while to understand (I think I deleted two or three attempts at in case you were wondering); The end boss himself is a collection of people molded into one and you have to wear him down in order to beat him. After knocking out his shields, he then sends out a really dangerous wave of energy before regaining all his shields again, this is him changing forms but they don’t explain that so I was horribly confused when this happened. Once you repeat this a couple of times, his shields are completely gone and he is opened to kill. In typical RPG fashion, this isn’t his only form and he returns as a massive creature. In the second phase, all you have to do his shoot at his faces which, much like the first phase, will change after taking out the shields. My biggest issue with this fight (besides the enemies that spawn with it but I’ve already rambled about that in a previous video) is that it isn’t really clear about these phases; I had no idea as to why his shields recharged after destroying them or why he became invulnerable during that process or how to actually do damage to his health (I thought I was missing some weird gimmick like I need to hit some particular thing before attacking him). I don’t think I was ever close enough to him to watch and see if his face changes during the first phase of the fight so I would’ve liked another indication of this happening. At the very least, they could’ve explained this during the game either with an audio log of Zarpedon talking about what she saw or even dedicate an entire mission as to trying to decipher their notes or something like that. It is a running theme within the Borderland’s series that you never know what is in the vault which add a sense of mystery to them but, on the other side of that, you never really know what kind of guardian there is or why you should look for the vault. As much as I can appreciate the mystery of finding these vaults and seeing what is inside them, they could at least hint to what kind of guardian is protecting it, especially if they want to do these really gimmicky boss fights that aren’t really explained. Why did it have multiple faces? Is it one person or multiple people? What exactly are these Guardians (that being the race of creatures, not the protectors of the vaults) and how are they tied to these Vaults in general? All great questions I doubt are going to be answered until the next game. Maybe.
