Breakout (Atari 2600)
3One of the few titles I had actually played before on a real Atari 2600 and one of the most basic video games you could ever see, we have Breakout, released in 1978, which is the first home port of the arcade game made two years prior. Not much to say here, the objective is to use your paddle to knock the ball into the colored blocks (the wall) to earn points and keep hitting as it comes back, similar to American handball or jai alai, though the original arcade's cabinet art has a rather different story...
However, despite its simple concept, Breakout is actually a difficult game, because it is very easy to miss the balls and the movement can be unpredictable, so much that its sequel Super Breakout (which will be next for this console in the channel) addresses that problem. Breakout itself, like Space Invaders or Tetris, has MANY ports and it still exists today under different names such as "Brick Breaker".
