A little bit closer ... the ESXDOS screen flashes up so briefly it wasn't until I did a freeze-frame on the video that I could see it was complaining about ESXDOS.SYS ...

I'm using a freshly formatted 16GB SDHC (using official SD Formatter) and unzipped fresh ESXDOS 0.8.8 files.

Big thanks to Siarhei at zxbyte.ru who has been helping me ... he advised that pin B12 on the Байт expansion port was the ROMCS line, and that the ZX Spectrum peripheral's (DivMMC in this case) ROMCS line needed to be inverted & pulled low.

I will also take on board other suggestions that have been made, such as also adding some buffering on the address lines, for example.
