So okay, this is half just because I stumbled into some new "toys" in terms of software that I wanted to try out and this just happened to be a wacky little thing that I decided to test it on first...it'll be especially interesting to see how it turns out, because it's mostly line-graphics and we all know how YouTube likes the small details like that. I hope that it at least turns out looking like something you can see what's going on in...I shrank down the game's size as much as possible, because the text would be downright unreadable at the size it always is if it were part of a bigger picture.

My other major test of the software that I'm playing around with actually went up first, but I'm waiting to see how that one turned out as well, and by the time you read this, it may or may not also already be uploaded.

The other half of what this is that this is a plug for an awesome little game I happened to find out about recently, it's called Captain Forever by an independent game developer Jarrad Woods (also known simply as Farbs) who used to work for 2K Australia before going solo, and this is his most recent creation.

The idea is wonderfully simple, you are a little command unit called Nemesis, and space ships in this desolate sector of the universe are completely modular, it seems. You take little pieces of this and that and stick them to your command module, like girders, boosters, and lasers...and you basically build yourself the best ship you can with what you're able to scrounge up.

This, of course, is the real meat of the game...you see, aside from the small cluster of basic parts you are left with by the info probe at the outset, you've got to "acquire" more pieces to work with...and things like that just don't float freely through space, you've got to MAKE them float freely through space by blowing up enemy spacecraft. ...or any spacecraft, really, but most of them truly are out just to get you. It seems this is a very hostile sector of space indeed.

Generally speaking, you'll run into ships made of just about the same quality parts as yours happen to be...with a few made of stuff a tad stronger. Your goal is basically to take down stronger ships, so you can salvage their parts, which will increase the "LAW" meter and attract the attention of even stronger vessels.

Ultimately, the game is endless...but once you can defeat the strongest ship type, you're "done" and can basically just wander around and assert your supreme dominance on all weaker ships than your own, because each successive increase to the strength of enemies and the parts they're made of will blast the stuff made of two or three classes weaker materials than themselves to atoms without question.

This actually reminds me of Rogue and its ilk...but instead of turn-based dungeon crawling, it's action-based space combat with some pretty darn awesome physics for the game's overall simplicity. The idea is still the same, though...you get nothing, now build your way up to the highest peaks of power, and don't die! ...or you start over again with nothing.

Enough about that, though...if you like this game and what you see, go try it for yourself! I warn you, though...I started playing and time just kinda disappeared by the time I realized that I'd been trying "just one more time" for hours already.

Farbs has also cooked up two successors (one of which is actually named Captain Successor) so far, and the basic deal is that you pay him $20 and you're entitled to any and all future updates that he will made to the game, including those two and who knows what else there might be to come. If you like this game, I strongly encourage you to support indie game developers who do stuff like this.

Kudos to weclock for tuning me in on this one. He's actually got a YouTube account of the same name where he mostly makes videos that will one day embarrass his kids.
