Cartoon Saloon’s “Song of the Sea” - 2015 North American DVD Review
This is a review of the North American DVD of Cartoon Saloon’s 2014 masterpiece, “Song of the Sea.” This was an international co-production between the Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Denmark. Germany had no affiliation with this movie whatsoever. So, the film is based on the Irish Legend of the Selkies, a person that has the ability to turn into a seal. The movie follows a young Irish boy named Ben, who blames his mute younger sister, Saoirse, for the apparent death of his mother, Bronagh. Later on in the movie, Saoirse reveals herself to be a Selkie and turns herself into a seal at the 40 minute mark of the movie. Then, Ben and Saoirse go to visit their Granny on the mainland. Then they are pursued by the evil owl witch, Macha, and a host of ancient and mythical creatures. Saoirse and Ben must race against time to learn the truth about their past and awaken Saoirse’s powers before it’s too late. This film was distributed by GKIDS in the US, under exclusive license to Universal Studios Home Entertainment for North American distribution. I hope you enjoy the show and learn a lot about Irish mythology through this beautifully animated movie. 🇮🇪🦭
