(CCPlays) Cold Waters Dot MOD | 1984 NATO Cruiser Campaign | Part 6: Saying Goodbye
Previously, in the 1984 NATO Cruiser Campaign...
We destroyed two replenishment convoys in surface actions, a small one ( 3 ships total) and a big one (4 escorts and 3 transports).

Welcome to another episode of Captain Chang Plays (CCP) and we are still in Cold Waters. We are doing 1984 NATO campaign, but with a twist... we are using a surface ship... a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser.
New updates will be posted every two days.

29-DEC-84 Norwegian Sea, near Trondheim
We are looking for Soviet diesel-electric attack subs near the Norwegian coast when we encountered a subsurface contact.
We took down a Whiskey, then a Tango, and 2 more Tangos (total of 4 subs). We actually got away from two torpedos at the end, a wake homer, which we got VERY lucky that it "seeked" in the wrong direction and entered an infinite loop, and a passive seeker, which we JUST ran out of juice after a couple decoys. We spent most of our torpedos that we had to go back for reloads.
29-DEC-84 Holy Loch, UK
We received new orders.
MISSION: Destroy the Soviet Replenishment Convoy in the Western Barent Sea near Murmansk.
Unfortunately, due to the reloads we require, by the time we reached the middle of Norwegian Sea the Replenish convoy had left the area. Mission failed.
31-DEC-84 Norwegian Sea
Received new orders.
MISSION: Hunt enemy diesel-electric attack subs transiting the GIUK gap.
We transit back to the gap and it's the new year
01-JAN-85 Norwegian Sea near Toshavn
We ran into a sub-surface contact coming from the west.
The two helos quickly took off and prosecuted a subsurface contact which turned out to be a Foxtrot. It was sunk but it did fire a few torpedoes our way. They were dodged.
We continue to patrol.
03-JAN-85 Norwegian Sea near Toshavn
We spotted a subsurface contact coming in from the east and setup an intercept.
The helos quickly prosecute the Foxtrot, only to see a Tango further in the distance. Foxtrot spat out several torpedoes in multiple salvos and one of them managed to get close enough to Ticon's wake for the wake homing to activate. In the meanwhile, the Tango had also spat multiple torpedoes in our direction.
I ordered one of the helos to split off and prosecute the Tango, then the Foxtrot died, freeing the helo to run north to help prosecute the Tango. It will drop off the torpedo and run back for reloads. The helo there managed to add enough torpedoes in the water to sink the Tango.
We ended up eating one wake homer and pump system had failed. DamCon was troubleshooting it, when a passive torpedo also latched onto us, and made it through multiple noise-makers. We suffered a 2nd torpedo hit, and for a moment, we thought the ship may be able to limp back to port... Until one of the bulkheads failed, and without the pump system back online, the ship started listing very quickly, and I had no choice but to order all hands to abandon ship.
We were quickly picked up by Norwegian Coast Guard and welcomed, but I was saddened to learn that over 50 of my crew did not make it. But intel told us we have accomplished our mission, for these two subs were our objective.
We were flown back to UK the next day and transferred to the USS Vincennes, another Ticonderoga-class CG, which was ferried to the UK without most of her senior officers (who are still stateside). I offered anyone who wanted to leave the option to do so. Very few took up my offer, and I wish them the best of luck, for it is our duty to go in harm's way.
And the war continues...
