(CCPlays) Cold Waters Dot MOD | Swarmed by Ants: How Many FFG can Kirov Kill Before It Dies?
Welcome to Captain Chang Plays (CCP) Cold Waters w/ DotMod.
While Kirov was the largest cruiser in recent times, the way it's armed suggests it is a bit of a "glass hammer". With only 20 ASMs, and no guns in the bow, it is a very poor pursuit and general combat vessel.
So how many NATO frigates (a mix of Knox, Perry LH, and Type 21) will it take to take down the Kirov, assuming human is in command of the Kirov?
Let's run an experiment or two...
Map: North Atlantic 1984 Soviet
Units: 1 Group, Aggressive, and units with checkmarks next to Knox DD, Perry LH, Perry SH, and Type 21. Four total. As for QTY, let's do 9.
So you are facing 9 frigates, and you end up playing air defense as you block EVERY Harpoon and emptied your SAM cells with little to gain.
You *can* send SAMs as anti-ship missiles but you need to keep some around "just in case".
Let's just say it didn't go too well for the Kirov. Most FFs died, but Kirov did not survive as it doesn't have bow guns so chasing down the FFs is a bad idea. And the stern-mounted AK-100s have inferior range compared to the 5-inch guns on the later frigates.
If we ran the scenario again with 7 frigates, we find that Kirov did not have any serious problems with killing all 7. Once the NATO side depletes their ASMs you can send your 20 big ASMs in waves of 3 which will let you wreck 5-7 of the ships, and your remaining SAM acting in antiship mode will do the rest.
So I think we can safely say, the number is "about 8" frigates to take down the Kirov.
But what do you think?
