(CCPlays) Cold Waters Dot MOD | NATO 1984 | What CAN stand up to Kirov and 2 Escorts of CG or DDG?
Welcome to Captain Chang Plays (CCP) with Cold Waters / DotMod, where I put up some odd matchups and see how they fare.
Today, the question we're trying to answer is... What ship can actually survive "One versus All" scenario, by actually fighting?
The single mission "One Versus All" defaults to a Knox-class frigate, where you face the mighty Kirov, plus 2 other ships, CG or DDG. The primary objective is to survive, and the secondary objective is simply to do as much damage as you can.
The problem with survival is you need to survive the ASM barrage, where you face over 40 ASMs from the various ships, sometimes, over 60, depending on how unlucky you are.
You are unlikely to survive more than one hit, as a single hit will usually knock out your propulsion, unless you are very lucky, or you are cruiser-sized.
My experiments showed:
Knox-class FFG -- wins 0 out of 3. With only one CIWS and no counter-missiles, chances of surviving without taking more than one hit are negligible.
Oliver Hazard Perry-class FFG -- wins 1 out of 3. With up to 40 SM-1s (if all Harpoons are removed) you face a lot fewer ASM if you intercept correctly. If you miss even one, you are crippled, and a second shot will kill you. Zigzaging helps a little. But if you do survive the ASMs, then you can try a gun battle with the ships that exhausted their ASMs. You may get lucky, even though your 3-incher only has a range of 15.5 km.
Spruance-class DDG -- wins 0 out of 3, roughly same problem as Knox-class FFG, due to having old and slow Sea Sparrows and little else. Having 2 CIWS doesn't help much as they cover separate sides of the ship and there is no arc where they can both cover.
Belknap-class CG -- wins 3 out of 3. Belknap actually carried enough SM-1s to defend itself and a couple extra to shoot down the May and the helos, and still have a few left over. But with only 8 Harpoons there's no way this will penetrate the SAM network of 3 different ships. Instead, it had to close within its gun range of 22.5 km to kill enemy ships.
So SM-1 is the key to survival, and once you do that, you can gun them to death.
