(CCPlays) Cold Waters Explained: How to fight other surface ships as a DDG Surface Ship (w/DotMod)
One of the features of DotMod is the ability to play as surface ships, not just submarines. In this custom mission, we set up an Arleigh Burke DDG against 2-4 Chinese frigates and illustrates how to kill them as a surface ship in Cold Waters w/ DotMod.
For authenticity of tactics, this mission is played at "realistic" difficulty.
-----
As a surface ship, you should turn on your radar, ESM, and scope almost immediately, unless you are trying to hide from an enemy with no missiles. Your surface-to-air missile (SAM) needs radar to guide, as does your cannon, if mounted.
We don't need Nixie as we are not fighting submarine threats today. Nor do we need towed array today.
Your radar will automatically sort out the surface contacts in a few seconds.
As the helo is useless in surface warfare except as a distraction, we will not be launching it today.
We can identify the contacts via visual or acoustic signatures (i.e. open the scope and check it against your recognition book, or do it just like you'd do it in a submarine).
If the enemy starts firing antiship missiles, You can click on the (missile / line) icons next to the number under RIM-66M-5. Click it just once is enough, as it will then automatically launch enough SAMs to deal with incoming threats, as long as radar is on.
We have quickly found 3 contacts to the WSW, though one of them is unidentified. Then when we identified it... and that's when it started pumping out those anti-ship missiles, and my DDG responded with SAMs.
Then it's the next ship's turn, and more SAMs were launched to intercept. But none got through.
We reached 20 km and I clicked on the nearest target, and turned on the main deck gun, and the gun started firing.
I also started launching the alternate Standard missile in antiship mode (you can choose between normal, anti-air, and anti-ship) in salvoes of 2 at a time, even as Jiangwei continued to launch ASMs.
Then the (mini) antiship missile got through and boom! Jiangwei blew up.
Then it's Chengdu's turn, as the ASM got through. It really has very little anti-missile defense except chaff.
We continued as we wonder what the final ship will do. And when it started lobbing antiship missiles, it's time to reply in kind. Salvo of two, evaluate, salvo of two, repeat...
He chaffed away one, then another... But not a third... it hit, which knocked out something else. Ship's dead in the water, then came the second hit, which finished it. Third and fourth are not necessary.
And that's all enemies eliminated.
