(CCPlays) Cold Waters Sea Trials: Trying out the Adelaide-class Frigate
One of the features of DotMod is be able to play as a surface vessel, and one of the additions was the Australian Adelaide-class Frigate, which is derived from the Oliver Hazard Perry-class Frigate of the US Navy.
Normal armaments are Standard SM-1 SAMs (i.e. RIM-66) with multi-mode attack, some Harpoon ASMs, a 76mm (3 inch) cannon, the standard triple ASW torpedo launchers, and 2 Seahawk helos.
How does it handle?
------
With no ASROC, your only ability to prosecute submarines would have to be done by the two Seahawk helos, each capable of carrying 2 torpedoes. Having FOUR torpedoes on call allows you to drop several of them along a bearing line, sandwiching the sub. Just make sure you know which helo you are commanding as it doesn't say on the tactical map.
Anti-ship capability is fine with a combination of Harpoon, Standard in ASM mode, and the cannon. While the cannon is fairly small, it is adequate against typical targets such as other frigates. But a 3-inch gun has a very limited range (about 15 kms)
Anti-missile defense and anti-air defense are handled by the capable Standard missile, though this relies on the old Mk 13 (load and swivel) launcher. One Phalanx CIWS in the rear and standard chaff rockets for last-ditch defense.
Speed and handling of the ship seem adequate, though even on silent running, this is one noisy ship.
