(CCPlays) Cold Waters Explained: "Setting Sun" Redux / 688 vs. Soviet Svedlov Flotilla (DotMod)
In this Cold Waters scenario "Setting Sun", a 688 has been assigned to stop a Soviet surface flotilla that will disrupt NATO convoys attempting to reinforce Iceland and Europe. The flotilla is composed of the old gun cruiser Svedlov and multiple escorts, and may have helo ASW support.
This is a redux due to the previous version having suffered some serious audio problems. It has been replayed from start at realistic difficulty.
-----
Decided to risk no decoy, but kept 4 torpedoes loaded.
Immediately went to 150m, below the layer, and extended towed array, and turned east to make sure we get every last bit of audio signal we can. And we picked up the entire flotilla soon, and it's a matter of ID which ship is which, as there is always a risk of one or more civilian ship(s) in the area.
Soon we identified all the major players: Svedlov, Krivak I, Kresta I, Kresta II, and Udaloy. And they have air support dropping sonobuoys. At almost 50 km, the range is right on to limit for the torpedoes, but doable. Loiter time may be minimal though.
Four torpedoes were launched below the layer, at a dogleg to the northwest to be bent north or northeast.
It took two torpedoes to bring down the Svedlov, and the remaining torpedoes tried chasing down various targets but ran out of power. 4 torpedoes spent, 1 ship down.
Two more torpedoes are launched toward the ships, as Kresta I and Krivak I are heading south toward us, while the other two ships are headed north away from us. Those torpedoes are detected by helo and torpedoes dropped on them, but the torpedoes didn't care. And that's very far from my submarine.
We finally killed both, but somehow one of them fired a long-range torpedo and it's coming toward me. I was at 351m, so I just retracted towed array, and decided to go flank speed to northeast to avoid the torpedo without using a decoy, and for this we were successful. We slowed and turned north, waiting for the other two ships to turn back.
When they turned back, cutting through where all of their comrades sank, I had two torpedoes waiting for them.
We have completed both primary and secondary objectives: destroy the Sevedlov, and all of its escorts. Mission accomplished, clean sweep! No damage either!
-----
Debrief: In hindsight, I initiated the ambush way too early at too great a range. 50 km is way too far, doesn't leave a lot of loiter time for the torpedoes. Should be 30 km or even 20 km. If it was done correctly, there would have been one fewer re-attack, as 3 ships would have gone down in the first attack, then 2 more in the second. There would have been no third attack necessary.
