(CCPlays) Cold Waters Explained w/ DotMod: Sturgeon vs Kirov and Escorts and Sub
Here, I explain how Cold Water is played, with the scenario "Beating The Odds" where a Sturgeon class SSN must take down a Kirov-class battlecruiser and not get sunk in return. I explain the basic setup going into the mission, and my decision process, how I determine where to move to, and things like that, as we successfully engage and defeat the enemy(ies).
-----
As we go to general quarters, we turned south and dove to 200 m as we suspect there may be Soviet air patrols in the area.
Soon, we picked up multiple surface contacts, and one possible subsurface contact, all to the west / southwest.
We ID'ed them as Kirov, Kashin, and Kanin, all cruisers, but Kirov's the big daddy.
There is likely a submarine there as well, the unidentified Sierra 3.
After oberving their movement with accelerated time, and improved solution, we've determined their base course is 000 (due north).
I decided to launch 3 torpedoes. I have one torpedo, no wire, but set to activate way to the west, and 2 wired guided torpedoes, which I'm reserving for Kirov. That extra torpedo is just a bonus, a "bush-beater" if you will, to "provoke" anyone hiding to show themselves. I shot the no-wire torpedo due west, all others by heading 300 to be turned toward the target area later.
As the torpedoes transit to target, we can find a bunch of hostile torpedoes along the route, fired by other ships, fired by martime patrol bombers. But no matter...
We got 2 wire-guided torpedoes chasing the Kirov. One torpedo hit, then the other hit, sinking the Kirov.
This inspired the other two cruisers to ping extra hard. Once I got two torpedoes loaded, I sent two after the two cruisers, and soon they are sunk.
A third torpedo was sent west. Nothing. I decided to turn on the torpedo's sonar, and Sierra revealed itself... it is far to the northwest. I turn the southwestern torpedo with no target north, as well as launch another torpedo which will take a long time to get there. However, Sierra decided to depart the scene as it turned northwest and accelerated to flank, leaving everything behind.
As the distance to Sierra is beyond the torpedo range and still opening, I chose to disengage.

Post-Mission Debrief: Good job killing the Kirov, and the two cruisers are just a bonus.
