(CCPlays) Cold Waters Explained w/ DotMod: 688 vs Diesel Subs in "In the Presence of Wolves"
Here, I explain how Cold Water is played, with the simple scenario "In the Presence of Wolves" where a 688 is pitted against several Diesel-Electric subs which are smaller, but quieter. I explain the basic setup going into the mission, and my decision process, how I determine where to move to, and things like that, as we successfully engage and defeat the enemy(ies).

As we go to general quarters, we detected multiple contacts to the northeast and east, S1 through S3. We ID S1 as blue whale, then S3 active pinged us, at distance of 4 km?! I shot a torpedo at him... THEN realized I fired the decoy instead. Oops! I fired a torpedo to follow it, but it's time to go flank as the torpedoes are too close to rely on decoy alone.
I thought about going east or southeast, but it will take too long to turn that way as I was heading north. Decoy drew one of the two torpedoes from S3 (now IDed as Kilo) and as I reached flank speed of 33 kts, I continued north at 335 m and got away from the other torpedo (which was apparently set shallow) going southwest. After making sure I am okay I went back to ultraquiet, reload all tubes, and get ready to launch 3 torpedoes, 1 at each submarine contact.
We have IDed by now S1 is a blue whale, and S2 is a humpback whale. S3 is the Kilo, S4 is unknown, but probably a submarine, as it did ping me, and S5 is another submarine, now IDed as Zulu class.
I fired 3 torpedoes to ESE, then after about 4 km split them to one after each submarine.
Torpedo 2 has locked on S3 Kilo. Torpedo 1 is going northeast toward S5 Zulu, and Torpedo 3 is heading past the Blue whale toward the unknown S4. Then Torpedo 2 started turning in the opposite direction of Kilo, while locked onto something. I was wondering what it was seeking other than the Kilo... the answer occurred to me just as the torpedo detonated... S2 humpback whale. And indeed, S2 faded from sonar.
I immediately turned torpedo 3 back toward the Kilo to kill it now and worry about that S4 later. By this time, S4 went to all ahead flank and revealed itself to be a Tango class sub.
Kilo died but Tango had snapshot at least two torpedoes toward us. I fired one torpedo to ESE with long transit hoping to catch the Tango later.
The torpedo to the north caught the Zulu, but Zulu also snapshot at least two torpedoes my way. Fortunately, the dogleg worked and they did not even come close.
I guided the final torpedo into the Tango and waited for the rest of the torpedoes to run out of juice, and disengaged.

Post-mission debrief: should have realized the torpedo was locked into something that's NOT a submarine and not harmed the humpback.
