(CCPlays) Cold Waters Explained w/ DotMod : 688 vs Soviet SSK in "The Duel" Mission
Here, I explain how Cold Water is played, with the simple scenario "The Duel" where a 688 is pitted against a similar Soviet sub, usually a Victor. I explain the basic setup going into the mission, and my decision process, how I determine where to move to, and things like that, as we successfully engage and defeat the enemy sub.
-----
Engagement was relatively simple. We went to battlestations, and went silent running. We detected a surface ship, identified as a merchant. We waited patiently for a second contact. We found it due north. As range stabilized at roughly 10 km, we have roughly estimated his course to be southeast. When the sierra started cavitating, we decided to take advantage of the situation by launch 2 torpedoes toward the northeast, with intention to dogleg them northwest in about 5 km as a pincer.
The dogleg was successful, and the enemy, near the surface, had no idea the torpedoes are coming, until they are about 3km away. Unfortunately, the attempted pincer backfired, as the sierra snapshot one torpedo down each detected torpedo's bearing, which means one of them is coming directly at us.
We retracted the towed array, and launched a MOSS decoy just off of that torpedo's bearing, getting ready to sprint away if needed if the decoy did not work. Fortunately, the decoy did work, even as one of the torpedoes found our target and sank it.
We sprinted away to the west anyway as the torpedo did look it was going to be close. We stopped when we realized the decoy had drawn the torpedo back toward the north. We waited until all torpedoes ran out of juice, then disengaged.
-----
Post-mission debrief: In hindsight, it was a MISTAKE to split the torpedos to attempt the pincher movement, or to put it more precisely, the pincer was done wrong. It should have been done more from the east, so the retaliatory torpedo did not come toward us at all. We have defeated the original intention of the dogleg, and we only have ourselves to blame. We should NOT have needed to use that MOSS decoy.
