(CCPlays) Cold Waters (Dot Mod): Arleigh Burke DDG Hunting Chinese Subs and Fleet
One of the fun things with dotMod with Cold Waters you can make your own scenarios. We've tried destroyer hunting subs, and we've tried destroyer swatting frigates. How about destroyer hunting subs AND swatting frigates at the same time?
Mission editor setup: 2-4 Chinese subs (all except Xia SSBN), and 2-4 Chinese frigates (the 4 FFs) are pitted against Arleigh Burke-class DDG late model (IIA), with one helo for support.
If you need a real-world reason... Let's say DDG assigned to clear this area of Chinese subs. But this is really an ambush, as the two frigates were hiding behind the freighters ready to pop all of their ASMs and there were more subs than expected. Instead of just one, there are more.
------
With radar and ESM mast raised, 2 civilian surface vessels (M3 and M4) are immediately identified and located, quickly followed by 2 frigates (M1 and M2)... which started firing ASM almost immediately. I turned air defense to auto, and the VLS SAMs started going out automatically. In the meanwhile, I tried to look for the sub.
Incredibly, I found one, a Song (S5) but I have no heading or distance. I turned west and increased to 15 kts. Then I checked contact... It turned to Master, which means the sub is on the surface! And I checked external view, and indeed that's true, the Song was running on the surface with just conning tower exposed for some reason! I ordered the gun crew to open fire when the range decreased to 22 km, but the two FFs are flanking the sub on either side, all charging toward me!
I shifted the gun fire to the western frigate, while I dropped an ASROC on the sub. The frigate tried to intercept the ASROC, but none of their SAMs tracked. The torpedo then chased the Song for next several minutes, missing or decoyed again and again. In the meanwhile, my gun crew went to rapid fire against the 2 frigates. One frigate took a few hits and caught fire, and slowed, and I shifted fire to the other, with some small zigzags between salvos.
The submarine died first, finally made a wrong turn, then both frigates sank after multiple direct hits from the cannon. However, sonar also picked up two additional submarines: S6 Improved Kilo and S4 Ming to the northeast. However, no range and no heading yet. What was interesting was there were multiple launch transients... and soon we have torpedo tracks heading toward me... I got the Seahawk to drop torpedoes that way, but nothing hit.
In a moment of stupidity, I forgot the retrieve the towed array before increasing speed, trying to get out of the way of the incoming torpedoes. I ended up destroying the towed array and messing up the Nixie.
I brought the Seahawk back to reload, then sent it out again, and I got ANOTHER set of launch transients from S6 Kilo Improved. However, this was occurring close to the helo and I ordered it to drop a torpedo at the suspected launch point, then drop the other at the other contact.
I turned hard right as that launch was aimed at where I may be if I continued north. Instead, I turned SE to get away from this latest salvo.
The torpedo dropped on S6 Kilo killed it.
The torpedo dropped on M4 Ming was still chasing it all over the ocean. I sent the Seahawk back out with orders to drop another torpedo on it, but just before the Seahawk arrived, the torpedo finally caught the Ming.
And that cleared the area of hostiles.
