(CCPlays) Genesis Alpha One R2 (7 of ?): Sector Exploring, Ship Assault, Boarding a Derelict, & more
In this episode of GAO R2 (Run 2), we discuss and demonstrate topics such as choosing destinations to explore and utilizing the navigational filters, what the ship assault module does exactly, and how to setup it up, and I board a derelict or two and grab an artifact.
EXPLORATION: Exploring a sector is much easier if you have multiple hyperdrives, even if you only jump one sector at a time. The expanded scanning range makes avoiding enemies quite easy, and if you have all 4 shields, it gives you a LOT time to jump away. Rogue captains have to beat down your shields to board you, and if you have all 4 shields, they are unlikely to beat down your shields.
SHIELD(S): Shield module, like most modules on a ship, can be enhanced by posting a crew at the module.
SHIP ASSAULT: this module is basically a transporter module where you get to board derelict or even hostile ships. You board the enemy ship to loot its resources and/or look for artifacts. Posting crew here will help you scan the target ship, and if its alive, bring down its shields so you can board.
SHIP DANGERS: the ship you board could have modules with busted nodes, and they cannot be repaired, which means it will deteriorate over time, and you don't have a lot of time. Some corridors and modules may have no air (so you must run through it and get back to area with air), and such area may collapse. You can see that in the "ship building" view. Area with no air has "skull and crossbones" sign, while leaking area has "Warning" sign.
SHIP SCANNING: the Ship assault module has scanners that can pinpoint what's available to loot from the other vessel. You need to assign one or more crew to do it, or you can do it yourself. You usually see some biomass, some processed material, a little ammo, some lame weapons, maybe even a barrier or two. Weapons and barriers and ammo would be in weapons lockers like your own ship. Biomass would be in the biotank module, and processed stuff can be accessed from any storage module. Artifacts could be anywhere, but usually in the crawlspaces.
ROGUE CAPTAINS: You can board enemy ships if they are in the same sector and your shields are better than his.
FINDING ARTIFACTS ON A SHIP (with Sensor II): If you have the suit upgrade SENSOR II, you can see where the artifacts are, much like you can on a planet. However, a ship (derelict or not) is 3-dimensional, and the sensor only shows direction, not up/down. And if you do see an artifact, it's usually hiding in a crawlway, and looks like a bunch of boxes.
So explore those crawlways, use turrets and barriers to cover you while you attempt to access it, and keep exploring and looting until you decided enough is enough.
3D MAP: You can bring up the "ship building screen" on the hostile ship and use it as a 3D map. You can't build anything as you don't have control of the ship. You CAN use the security checkpoint, beaming station, and turbolift. You can open their weapons locker to take stuff, and loot resources from storage modules (as if you're mining, but aim it at the storage computer). Finally you can take biomass from their biotanks.
RETREATING FROM SHIP: to return from the other ship, open the PDA (T), click and hold on the "beam back to ship" button until you appear back at your ship. Move away from the spot as you may accidentally be beamed back to the enemy ship.
HOSTILES ON ENEMY SHIPS: On derelicts, you're looking at lichens ready to activate into actual critters or soldiers, plus plenty of turrets of various levels. On active ships commanded by rogue captains, you will meet actual combat troops PLUS turrets, and some critters in the crawlspaces. Having the sensors as your suit upgrade is almost essential.
We explore a couple derelict ships / shipwrecks and try to solve a 3D puzzle as I explore the lounge / bar to find the entrance toward the hidden artifact. Then it's running all over Alpha One to look for resources. I'm using a LOT of turrets and that means a LOT of gunpowder.
