Part 10: Showdown with the Fiendlord
Now comes Part 10 and this is a continuation from the previous part.
We venture deeper into the Fiendlord’s Keep and it’s where things are starting to get a little tougher. Not only that but things are heading into serious territory. All the while, you will be facing off against many monsters that will take you down. If you’re like me and have trained, you should have Lightning II for Crono. Use that to clear out groups of enemies. Eventually you’ll meet up with Ozzie. Getting to him is a pain but with the battle, you need to hit switches. Attack Ozzie when he’s protected and he’ll deliver a counterattack. Eventually Ozzie’s hubris will be his undoing and you can guess how that goes. He’ll be back.
After dealing with Ozzie, we face off against the Fiendlord himself, Magus. Magus will be one of the tougher bosses in this game. He has 6666 HP and packs a lot of different attacks. The fight is split into two phases. Phase 1 will have him using regular attacks and multi-hit magic attacks. It interchanges between four elements: Light, Fire, Water and Shadow. Have a team of Crono, Frog and Lucca for the fight. It’s useful since you can counter three of his magic attacks with attacks of your own. You sadly have nothing against Shadow attacks. Switch between offense and healing when needed. Stock up on items and don’t be afraid to use healing spells if you have to.
Phase 2 is where things get dicey. Magus will start to lower his defense to cast a powerful spell. It’s at this point that you will need to step it up and unleash everything you have against him. Why? After 2 or 3 turns, he’ll unleash Dark Matter. Dark Matter is a powerful Shadow-based spell dealing 200-300 damage to the party. If you are fully healed, you can survive it. If not, expect to take a turn or two to get everyone healed up before attacking again. The fight is tough but it serves as a lesson on how to strategize in a game like this.
After defeating Magus, we learn that Magus was NOT responsible for creating Lavos. He was planning on summoning him. But something goes wrong and then Maguc, Crono and the party get sucked into a portal in time with Lavos’ roar echoing through the keep.
We learn that Crono and the gang reach the Prehistoric time. But it’s where the next part of the story takes place. The tribe has been attacked by the Reptites, everyone blames Ayla for what happened. But now Ayla is determined to see the battle through to the end. So she asks to ride the Dactyls to reach Tyran Castle and take down Azala.
Yep. This is going to be a tough fight indeed. We’ll see it happen in Part 11: Showdown at Tyran Castle.
